Cost-per-Use in CELUS #1: From Costs to Collection Decisions

Cost per Use (CPU) remains one of the most valuable — and often most challenging — metrics for collection development decisions.

In this webinar, we’ll show a practical and accessible approach to CPU analysis using CELUS together with Excel.

We’ll begin with a short introduction to CELUS and explain how usage data management can become faster and more reliable compared to traditional manual workflows. We’ll then explore how CPU currently works in CELUS, where typical challenges appear, and why different institutions often require different approaches.

The main part of the session will focus on a step-by-step demonstration of CPU analysis using Excel:

  • Preparing collections with title tagging
  • Generating and structuring usage reports
  • Calculating Cost per Use outside CELUS
  • Common mistakes and recommended practices
  • Real-life examples from librarian workflows

We’ll also introduce our broader CPU strategy in CELUS and explain when an Excel-based workflow is sufficient and when more advanced approaches may make sense.

Kamila Kosatova
Heart of Customer Support & Data Hub specialist
Kamila’s original plan was simple: help customers. Then she met Power BI. Then Data Hub happened. Then librarians started sharing their Cost per Use models. Somewhere between Excel formulas, fiscal year logic, title tags, and dozens of real-world CPU approaches, she quietly evolved into the team’s go-to person for turning usage data into actionable insights. These days, building CPU workflows in Excel and Power BI is just part of normal life. And after seeing what works (and what definitely doesn’t) across many institutions, Kamila is ready to share practical approaches that librarians can actually use back home.
